Yee Shun Milk Company is one of the more famous Cha Chan Teng in Hong Kong offering the usual egg and toast as well as instant noodles and desserts. For me, I frequent Yee Shun all the time not for the food but their desserts.
Yee Shun has many outlets with each outlet in a similar size and fashion. There is nothing fanciful about the café but a simple layout and setting interested in just serving food and feeding their patrons quickly.
From the window, you can see plates and plates and bowls and bowls of desserts ready made for the day. Yee Shun is famous for its steamed milk desserts in Macau and Guangzhou China before making its way here to Hong Kong.
If you visit during meal times, it can get pretty crowded although the change of tables is pretty fast as most of the locals just hop in for a quick meal and quickly get on their day. Some of them like us is here totally for their desserts only.
The menu itself is slotted into the glass pane of the table itself so you can order from the menu once you are seated. There is also an English menu if you need so you can ask the server for it.
The flagship of the store is this steamed milk pudding which has a consistency of partially solidified milk pudding and warm thick milk. The pudding itself is so soft it feels like the infant stage of a tofu. The moment you put it in your mouth, the pudding melts into warm liquid milk. It is better than any tofu pudding ever. You have to try it to know it. Those in Singapore can never match up in terms of taste and texture so this is a must to eat in Hong Kong.
The other dessert which is a popular one for Cantonese is the steamed egg pudding. Picture Japanese Chawanmushi but in a sweet form except that this version is a thicker and more egg version than chawanmushi which is usually watered down with chicken stock. This sweet dessert however is watered down with rock sugar water and some ginger juice. The egg pudding is fragrant and addictive.
There are also other flavours like the coffee milk pudding, milk pudding with red bean, milk pudding with jelly but personally I think the original plain hot one is the one that brings out the taste of the dessert perfectly. This is something I can eat everyday and not get sick.
