I had the chance to stay in the Shinjuku area for my recent trip, and I was booked in at the Hotel Sunroute Plaza Shinjuku, which was in a fantastic location

Located just a 5-minute walk from the main Shinjuku station, you would expect the area to be bustling with people, but surprisingly, the immediate areas surrounding the hotel were still quite peaceful and quiet

Right next to the hotel’s main entrance was the lift to the subway station. While it is not connected to the main Shinjuku station, you are still able to take the line to some of the popular areas like Ginza
I was surprised by the size of the hotel lobby, as I was expecting a smaller business hotel. On the first floor, there was a restaurant right at the front of the entrance, and the check-in counters were right at the end of the lobby. In the middle of the lobby, there was also a shelf full of amenities like toothbrush and toothpaste, mask, shampoo, bath salt, scrub cloth, razor, body lotion and even sunscreen. Customers can help themselves to all the amenities here, which are replenished daily. You can check in either via the automated machines or at the counters, if you prefer a human touch
The hotel is well-maintained and very clean from the lobby to the corridors on different floors. There are also free pyjamas for customer to wear during their stay, but not for them to bring home. Customer to get fresh pyjamas every day from the shelf near the lift lobby. There are also different facilities located on different floors. I had a vending machine and an ice dispensing machine located on my floor, which was really convenient when I needed to get ice for my drinks
The moment you enter the room, there is a small open wardrobe area for you to hang your jackets and clothes. The next part is the toilet and bathroom, which has the basic amenities like bath foam, shampoo and conditioner, hair dryer is provided. Although small, the bathroom comes with a bathtub, like most Japanese hotels. The position of the toilet can be a bit awkward for bigger frame customers, as the door will be quite close to you when the door is closed
The room is definitely small in size, as I had expected from a Japanese business hotel. For the rate I was booked in, this was the smallest room with a small double bed ( smaller than Queen size). There was not much space for luggage if there was more than 1 person staying in the room. The bed had space beneath due to the height, so I would recommend pushing in the luggage to make more walking space. There was also only 1 electrical outlet near the bed, which is not convenient if you have many electrical devices you wish to keep close to bed. As I had a CPAC machine and I wanted to charge my phone, it was not possible until I managed to borrow an extension bar from the hotel. The bed itself was semi-hard, which provided some support, and they had 2 types of pillows for different preferences

Right at the end of the room was the multi-purpose desk, which I used for work as well as make up and having meals. Hidden under the table was a small bar fridge as well as a humidifier, which was good for the dry air in the room. There are more outlets here on the desk, so you can also choose to charge your devices here
Overall, the hotel room is pretty standard for Japanese business hotels in terms of size, amenities and comfort. The hotel is really more of a value-for-money stay, located in an extremely convenient location next to the biggest interchange train station, as well as major shopping malls and eating places. Only a 10-minute walk to Kabuki Cho, which is lined up with restaurants open till late for those late-night suppers after a whole day of shopping
