KFC Fried Chicken Skin

When KFC first launched their fried chicken skin last year in November with a very limited quantity available at selected stores, many fans rushed to stores to grab them. Any legit fried chicken lover would definitely admit that the chicken skin is the best part of any fried chicken so when the fried chicken giant KFC finally decided to introduce their original recipe fried chicken skin as a side snack, it is no wonder that it got sold out almost immediately. Unfortunately, I was one of those who did not get to try them last year.

So when I saw the news that they will be re-introducing the fried chicken skin this February for a limited time period only, I geared my KFC app to make an order on the exact day they re-launched. Each box costs SGD 3.50 and comes in a standard nuggets box.

Each box was fitted with approximately 6 to 7 pieces of fried chicken skin. The skin was so huge that it looks more like chicken chunks than skin. The skin arrives still crispy from the delivery with the signature KFC original recipe scent and look

Finally, getting my hands on these sinful treats but my first bite was kind of a disappointment. Each piece was made of a large chicken skin curled up with some fats and batter. While the pieces were extremely crispy, it lacked that signature taste from the original recipe. Instead, it had more of a floury and peppery taste to the chicken and it was also quite dry. After discussion with my equally crazy about a fried chicken friend, we concluded that it lacked the chicken oil from the chicken to moist the fried skin.

As I ordered 3 boxes at one go, I decided to give it a chance after the first lacklustre experience. I left the 2 boxes sitting for 6 hours and tried them again. Amazingly, the flavours were much stronger with that signature umami flavours from the original recipe bursting from the first bite. I’m not sure if leaving the chicken skin sitting around allowed the flavours to seep into the skin better. Although it is not as crispy compared to when it was freshly cooked, it was also not soggy and the flavours were at least 50% better.

In conclusion, is the KFC chicken skin worth your SGD3.50? Personally, if you are really crazy about that KFC flavour, yes 1 box will help to curb your cravings. My personal tip is to leave it to sit for a while before consuming for the flavours to seep through and get ready your cooling tea for quenching the thirst from snacking too much on the skin.

The KFC chicken skin is now available for a limited time period only via delivery and dining in.
