Hua Kee Chicken Rice

Chicken rice is a dish you will find in every big or small hawker center, food court, coffee shop and even hotel coffee house in Singapore. Everyone has their own favourite stall of chicken rice and I chanced upon this stall during one of my market visits in Redhill.

The Hua Kee stall stands out from the rest as there is a long queue any time of the day. It is apparently very popular in the neighbourhood and you can see many of the people queuing are mostly staying nearby. I decided to queue and my wait time was a total of 30 – 45 mins on a Saturday afternoon.

As you queue towards the stall, you can see many awards and accolades from food bloggers who has come to Redhill just to try the chicken rice. The stall is mended by an old friendly lady and her son.

The stall is closed on Monday and Tuesdays and the minimum cost of one packet of chicken rice is at SGD 3. The chilli and dark sauce is also provided outside the stall for self service.

The old lady takes the orders, prepares the rice and soup, cooks additional rice and prepares the plate or takeaway packet while the son is busy chopping away on the chicken. When you see how busy the old auntie is, you will understand why the queue moves slowly and will be more forgiving in waiting in line.

The rice looks very healthy in one glance and perhaps because the order I had was the chicken breast. You don’t see the usual glean and shine of a layer of oil and seasoning on the rice like the usual chicken rice. The rice is steamed and is more mushy compared to other chicken rice. There is also an extremely light fragrant of pandan leaves and chicken fats but totally minus the oiliness. The chicken itself is soft and tender and the rice reminds me of a home cooked chicken rice meal cooked with much love for your health. The chilli however is in another world; it is so spicy and packs a crazy heavy punch which is too spicy and yet too delicious not to continue eating.

Overall, this might not be the most umami tasting and finger licking chicken rice stall but the simple and healthy tastiness of this chicken rice stall beckons me to patronise it more than the other stall simply because it feel like home. ( The only thing that really stops me is the 30mins wait =P )
