Peace Hotel High Tea

I have always wanted to visit Shanghai’s Peace Hotel because of the various movies I have watched filmed at the hotel, as well as the history of the hotel. Built in 1929, it was known as the decor landmark on The Bund, featuring luxury rooms, fine dining and a legendary elderly jazz band

Since I was not staying at the hotel, I chose to enjoy the high tea for an experience of the 1930s Shanghai glamour at The Cathay Room, located on the 9th floor of the hotel

The Cathay Room was originally Sir Victor Sassoon’s private banquet hall with sweeping, unobstructed views of the Huangpu River and the futuristic Lujiazui skyline. You can also gain access to the private balcony, which has the best view of the Bund

The high tea is an indulgence at RMB 638 per person, with a tiered serving of both sweet and savoury items and 2 beverages

There were 3 tiers of a mix of sweet and savoury pastries, plus another plate of scones. I preferred the savoury options as I found the sweet ones really extremely sweet. The scones were also quite dry and not buttery

I had a matcha alcoholic drink as my first choice and a hot tea for my 2nd beverage. The matcha-based alcoholic drink was pretty interesting and quite strong for someone like me. The tea was generic since I ordered chamomile tea

Overall, I wouldn’t say the food is great, and this is more of an experience to see the private banquet hall as well as the private balcony with an unobstructed view of the Bund. While the menu is pricey, I took it as a once-in-a-lifetime experience to immerse myself in the old Shanghai glamour
