Men Wah Bing Teng (Kai Tak)

When you are in Hong Kong, it is a given to visit any Cha Chaan Teng ( Tea shop) for a meal, and since my last visit was partially for work, I could only squeeze in time to visit one within the mall

Located in Kai Tak Mall, which is one of the new places for concerts, the mall is almost as huge as Singapore’s Vivocity, with multiple buildings linked together. Men Wah Bing Teng is a chain with a retro 1960s vibe and is famous for their “Sorrowful Rice” (a famous dish from Stephen Chow’s movie), satay beef noodles, and crispy polo buns

The restaurant is semi-open concept, so customers outside can look in viewing the diners having their meal. The restaurant is not too big, with quite limited spaces, so it gets very crowded during peak meal times. We waited close to 10 minutes to get a table for 3 of us

I ordered the iced almond milk, which was thick and creamy, and as an almond lover, it is a drink I would definitely order at any Hong Kong Cha Chaan Teng

As it was pretty crowded, we ordered something fast, which was their omelette over rice. There were a few versions of this, and the difference is the meat, which you can choose from pork, shrimp or beef. I chose the shrimp with omelette over rice, where the egg was soft and fluffy and very nice over the warm rice

Our lunch set also comes with the blanced vegetable with oyster sauce, and we ordered the fried chicken for sharing. The fried chicken was delicious with old-school flavours and succulent flesh and crispy skin, while the vegetables were perfectly blanched, with the crunch remaining without the raw and grassy flavours

Overall, we had a really quick meal at Men Wah Bing Teng, and we wished the service was slightly faster compared to the rate at which they were clearing the tables. In accordance with Hong Kong culture, we had to eat really fast as many people looked on waiting for their tables. The food was decent, but might not be the best in Hong Kong, as there are still some negatives, like clumpy cold rice, which my colleague got, while mine was warm and fluffy
