I am not exactly your pizza person, so I chomp on pizza about once every 2 to 3 months. I visited this place as we had a farewell lunch with one of our team members, and somehow, pizza seemed like the best choice
Founded in London in 1965, Pizza Express aims to bring authentic Italian pizza in a casual dining environment to reach more customers. The space in Star Vista is decorated like a modern American fast-food diner, with the main pizza counter taking the centre stage and seating for up to 60 customers at any one time
They were running a promotion when we visited and offered salad and dough balls for free with the purchase of 2 large pizzas. Their promotion changes periodically, so it would be best to check in the store. The pizza dough balls came with a cheese dipping sauce, which basically tastes like plain chewy pizza dough with a cheese dip, whereas the salad was a nice, refreshing starter with a Caesar sauce on the side
With a big group of us, we were able to order many different dishes to give them a try. For the pastas, we order the linguine vongole and penne arrabiatta for sharing. The vongole is relatively light in flavour and misses out on the umami flavours of the clams. The penne was better in terms of flavours, as the tomato-based pasta has a chunky and thick sauce which clings nicely to the penne
For pizza, we had the Parma e Rucola, Hawaii-not, Carbonara, Giardiniera, American Hottest and Margherita Prima. Generally, the pizza had a choice of dough from a thin, stretched crust to a normal, thicker crust. The flavours are quite authentic as Italian pizzas, and the ingredients were fresh and quite generous. The pizzas are more affordable than those in the formal Italian restaurants, which is great for family gatherings. Some of the unique flavours which stood out to me were the Carbonara and Hawaii-not as these were flavours not found elsewhere. The carbonara was a take on the popular pasta, but in pizza form, which was great for white cream lovers, and their version of the Hawaiian pizza was also not tomato-based, therefore has a much lighter flavour, which brings out the natural sweetness of the pineapple much more
Overall, Pizza Express is a great place for large group gatherings with different choices of pizza and pasta with rather authentic Italian flavours. Prices are also affordable and will not cause a big damage to the wallet. I would choose them over other fast-food pizza restaurants
