Jia Bin Bak Kut Teh

As a fan of Malaysian Bak Kut Teh, I am always ready to try new restaurants or outlets selling the Klang style of Bak Kut Teh

I chanced upon this restaurant while on my way to a medical check-up and decided to have my lunch here

The restaurant was fuss-free in terms of decor and had multiple tables to cater to customers for their meal. Originating from Seremban, Malaysia, the brand has been established for over a decade and serves a 4th-generation recipe. This outlet at Rangoon Road has been open since November 2018 and specialises in Klang-style herbal bak kut teh and dry bak kut teh

They set up a small condiment table for customers to help themselves to utensils, cut chilli, fresh minced garlic, and dark soy sauce

You can order via their QR code on the tables, and also customise your order with additions or removal of certain ingredients. I ordered the signature herbal soup version, but added more fried beancurd and enoki and customised my meat to pork belly instead of the usual pork ribs, as I was too lazy to deal with the bones. Instead of rice, I also ordered the mee sua in soup. The biggest difference between Jia Bin’s Bak kut teh from other Malaysian ones I have tried in Singapore is the broth. While you can smell the herbal base, it is not overpowering when you taste it. Instead, there is a nice balance between sweetness and savoury and a light herbal flavour which was not bitter at all. The meat was soft and flavourful, and paired well with my noodles

Overall, this is a lighter version of Malaysian bak kut teh without the herbal bittersweet aftertaste of some versions. The flavours were light but impactful for a nice, hearty meal at any time of the day, since the restaurant was fully air-conditioned
