The St. Regis Lhasa Resort

I have only been to St Regis a few times in my life, and only to dine, not to stay overnight. The only 1 time I got to stay overnight was in Bangkok during a company event. Not only was that stay extremely memorable, but it was also an experience I look back on fondly and review here

When it was time for us to choose between St Regis and Shangri-La for our stay in Lhasa, the choice was simple for me. At SGD 250 per night only, St Regis is definitely the one, since you will never get this room rate there elsewhere

The hotel was massive and almost majestic, and was separated from the main streets with a long and winding uphill slope. Once our car arrived at the drop-off point, there was a huge courtyard with its own parking spaces for guests and a gigantic fountain. This extensive and elaborate decor and furnishings are also extended into their internal halls and areas. From the main entrance, rows of seating are set up facing the ceiling-to-floor windows facing the Potala Palace, whereas to the right are the check-in counters, and to the left is the breakfast restaurant

The entire complex is massive, and it turns out that the room we booked was located on another block and not on the main block. We walked along the corridors for 2 minutes to reach the other block

The rooms were again massive and were dressed in opulent furnishings, like the plush carpeting, immaculate bathtub and classy framed photos in every area of the room. To start, you are greeted by the main living area with a huge sofa and table, which is then connected to the 2 twin beds, which had great support for our sleep. To the right side of the bed was a small area with cupboards and a working desk. Past the living room was the bathroom and dressing area, where you get 2 separate basins, a bathtub and 2 smaller rooms for the toilet and shower room

The breakfast restaurant on the other side of the reception has another huge reception area to register guests going into the restaurant. The counter serving light snacks like cereal and chocolate is also located in the reception area

There weren’t too many seats, so it is recommended to come for breakfast during non-peak hours. The breakfast is semi-service, and semi- help yourself buffet style. They serve hot food like sausages, fried rice, fried noodles, fried vegetables, bacon, eggs, bread, fresh fruits, steamed buns and dim sum, bagels and cakes, as well as a live noodles station as part of the self-service buffet area. There is a small menu where some exquisite items are available, like the eggs Benedict, big breakfast, pancakes and eggs. You can place an order with the staff for the special menu

Overall, the stay at St Regis Lhasa was comfortable and nice, and we stayed in most of the time. With the humidifier and oxygen machine provided in the room, it reduced any of my discomfort from the high altitude I felt when I was in Tibet. With the huge room, we ordered food nightly from our apps, and the cleaning was always good and prompt the next day. Breakfast was ok with an acceptable variety. While the food is not as good as the one I had at the other St Regis, I guess it was nice since the ingredients were not in abundance in Tibet
