Lhasa Kitchen – 拉萨厨房

One of my concerns about travelling in Tibet is food, since I do not eat beef, and from many online sources, most of the local Tibetan food involves beef

When we were on our tour, we wanted to try Tibetan food, but also ensure that I had a food choice, so our guide brought us to Lhasa Kitchen, which is extremely popular with foreigners on tour, since all guides bring their customers here for lunch

The restaurant is huge with different kinds of seating spaces available. They have proper dining seating as well as a sofa and lower tables for customers to chill with snacks and drinks

Located just a short stroll from the iconic Jokhang Temple, the restaurant specialises in Indian and Nepali cuisine and not really local Tibetan cuisine. What makes it really convenient is that the staff are fluent in English, Nepali, Tibetan, and Chinese, making it very easy for visitors across the world

Since there were no pork dishes and hardly any chicken, I ordered vegetarian dishes to eat with rice. I had masala tofu and yellow curry vegetables. The flavours were quite authentically Indian and weren’t too spicy for me. Due to the higher altitude, I wasn’t too hungry and did not eat too much, but the food was generally ok

My friends also ordered the yak dumplings, which I did not eat and braised chicken with vegetables, which I tasted some of, and the flavours were quite close to Chinese cuisine. There was hardly any meat in the chicken chunks since this was not a common ingredient in Tibet. The yak dumplings, according to my friends, were quite gamey with a strong beef flavour

Overall, Lhasa Kitchen has many varieties of cuisines to choose from, and the staff were friendly and helpful. The environment is very local but clean enough for most travellers. The food might not be the best, but it is good for most travellers
