Sun Kee Cheese Noodles

Hong Kong is like a land of instant noodles where the noodles gets the spotlight and establishes a world of its own in the local cafes and restaurants. It is strange how Hong Kong; one of the famous countries for gourmet cuisines, actually serves up as many instant noodles in their cafes as handmade wanton noodles.

In an environment where instant noodles is available everywhere, some cafes have improvised their version by making special broths or special sauces. Sun Kee is one such café where they serve their noodles with slow braised pork neck meat and creamy cheese sauce. In both their outlets, you can find walls of photographs of many Hong Kong stars eating the noodles; providing a incidental endorsement of the noodles.

The original outlet at Tsim Sha Tsui is an extremely small and hole in a wall kind of café within the dark and dodgy Kimberly Court. The outlet is small, cramp and typically oily floored and very old.

The star of the café is the pork neck and the cheese sauce so you get various combinations of pork neck with cheese sauce noodles, pork neck and rice or beef with cheese sauce. The prices at Sun Kee is on the pricey side with each main dish costing as much as HKD 50 or more.

The pork neck cheese noodles itself is pure heaven, ever since I discovered the place, I have been visiting every time I am in Hong Kong. The pork neck meat itself is braised till soft, tender and flavourful while the cheese sauce is thick and creamy. The simplest way to describe the noodles is a light version of carbonara sauce with springy instant noodles. Having 1 bowl itself is really very filling because of the sauce so if this is not a main meal, it would be good to share.

It is not very easy to find the café so I am providing more pictures to make it easier. When you get to Kimberly Court, Look out for this entrance.

Walk straight in till you see the signboard which is at the end of the path. Turn left and you will be able to see the Sun Kee café. For those opting for a brighter and cleaner environment, you can check out their newer outlet at Wan Chai.
