This is going to be a short and simple post. It is dedicated to my favourite old school snack called Putu Piring. In my opinion and many others who willingly stand in queue for this stall, this is the BEST Putu Piring in Singapore.
Putu Piring is a round shaped rice flour snack filled with palm sugar ( gula melaka ). This is basically the Malay or Indonesian version of the Chinese Tutu Kueh. While the Chinese version has grated coconut or peanut fillings, the putu piring is notably the sweeter cousin with gula melaka fillings.
This store in Haig road has been operating since the 1940s and had been in business for 4 generations. The business has always been managed within the family and today the daughter who is trained in bakery and pastries has taken over the helm of the business
As you queue and wait in line, it is fascinating to see the ladies dressed in white work on the snack. They work in a factory line manner in perfect harmony with each other. One filling the rice flour on the mould, another putting the gula melaka filling, another wrapping it with cloth and placing into the steamer and another one packing the steamed ones into packets.
Each packet comes with 5 Putu Piring and fresh grated coconut. While the appearance might not be perfect with holes exposing the fillings, one bite into this goodie brings you to dessert heaven. Paired with the fresh grated coconut, there is a crunchy fragrance that pares down the sweetness of the gula melaka. The flour used is very fine therefore each putu piring is smooth and soft to the bite. Not to mention, each putu piring explodes with gula melaka in lava form so what is there not to like about this dessert? This stall has been awarded many green book and Michelin awards so hop by this instance to try this.
Price is $2.50 per packet of 5 Putu Piring
