Lo Hey HK Seafood

I chanced upon a hidden gem at Holland Village as I was searching for a restaurant nearby for good food in a good environment

Opened in 2024, Lo Hey Seafood restaurant offers authentic Cantonese seafood and zi char dishes in a nostalgic Hong Kong-inspired decor space

Inspired by the 1990s and early 2000s Hong Kong Movie era, the restaurant is decorated like a Hong Kong cinema with faded movie posters of popular 2000 HK movies. The other side of the restaurant features bright, vibrant colours depicting the famous Hong Kong Cha Chaan teng Cafes, wet markets and landmark sights like Diamond Hill

A signature dish, Lo Hey Tossed Chicken Salad, resembles the Yu sheng dish we eat during Lunar New Year. The dish has poached chicken served right at the centre of the plate, surrounded by a colourful medley of finely sliced cucumber, carrots, purple cabbage, red pepper, leek and ginger. The chicken was extremely tender and succulent, while the fresh vegetables provided a nice, refreshing crunch. The tangy vinaigrette sauce combined the ingredients perfectly for a unique and refreshing dish, which opens up your appetite for the rest of the meal. You have to call them to place a pre-order for this dish, as they prepare only a limited number per day

For vegetables, we had 2 dishes: stir-fried kai lan with garlic and stir-fried spicy shrimp long beans. Both dishes were very well done, as the vegetables had a nice charred flavour from the strong wok hey but were still tender and crunchy. The seasoning was also on point and great to be eaten with rice. The vegetables were also naturally sweet without the overcooked bitter flavour

For meat dishes, we ordered the sizzling chicken claypot with ginger, braised beancurd in claypot with pork belly and salted fish pork belly claypot. As a Cantonese, I have to say that the dishes were extremely well done, with great heat and wok hey and perfect seasoning. Even my Hong Kong colleague commented on the authenticity of the dishes in terms of flavours. The meat was tender and flavourful, and each dish had its distinctive taste

We also had the deep-fried cuttlefish with salt and pepper, claypot fish slices with ginger and spring onions and claypot scallops with braised vermicelli. This next batch of dishes did not disappoint either. The vermicelli absorbed the gravy well and was flavourful on its own, and the seafood was fresh and cooked perfectly without being overcooked

Last but not least, we also had the salted egg Japanese pumpkin claypot and supreme soy sauce fried HK noodles. We ordered the fried rice as well, but I couldn’t find photos of it, which was probably consumed before I managed to take a photo. One of the highlights of the meal was the salted egg pumpkin and the soy sauce noodles. The taste was so good that we kept going for more and even considered ordering a 2nd helping.

Overall, I highly recommend Lo Hey to anyone who adores Cantonese cuisine, and the whole bright space is also endearing to the elderly and families. Almost all the dishes we tried were great, and we left with all dishes cleaned and empty, which is a testimonial of the flavours
