Haku Sushi @ Great World

I don’t really go for Omakases in Singapore due to the prices, and it doesn’t really seem worth it, but when social media posts of Haku Sushi started to pop up, it gained my interest as it was really quite value for money

Located in the basement of Great World City, Haku Sushi specialises in Kansai-style sushi omakase and offers value-for-money lunch sets from SGD 19

The restaurant is helmed by Chef Yamamoto Yoshiki, who brings with him over 35 years of experience from Osaka. Seasonal ingredients are air-flown directly from Osaka for their signature sushi-zu. The space is split into 2 areas, the counter seats and the roomier area for bigger groups, with the normal table seats

The way the Omakase works is quite interesting, as the first set of 5 sushi costs only SGD 19, and you can order more than 1 set if wanted. You can only move on to order the next 5 at a cheaper rate of SGD 18 after finishing the previous round, and the next at SGD 17. Prices are capped at SGD 17 after the 3rd round, but you can continue all the way till round 6 band each round has a different combination of sushi. I checked with the staff, and most customers stop at round 4. There are also some specials at 50% promotion, which you can order

The first set came with botan shrimp sushi, ikura sushi, sea bream sushi, eel sushi and minced tuna maki. The sushi size was perfect as it was small and bite-sized, with generous ingredients that were fresh and sweet

The next round came with tuna sushi, mackerel sushi, yellowtail, unagi fish with seaweed and Japanese horse mackerel sushi. I liked the previous batch better, as these fish were not as interesting to me, although the flavours were still nice

The next set, which came, was pretty nice with a chotoro sushi, salmon sushi, scallop sushi and 2 other sushi which I forgot. This combination was delicious as there was a good mix of fatty fish and lean fish with a crunchy bite

We stopped at the 4th round, which had a cup of minced tuna, more mackerel fish, whelk sushi and yellowtail sushi

These were the additional orders we put in for the 50% items, which were really overflowing with toppings. The uni was considerably sweet, and I ordered a 2nd round, which the Ikura was a lot more than the rice, which makes it slightly salty

Once the staff confirms that we have finished with the rounds, they will serve the soup and dessert. The miso soup had a deeper umami flavour than usual ones, as it was cooked with prawn heads, so there is an added sweetness to it. The tamago and sponge cake were soft, light and sweet, so it was a great ending for the meal

Overall, it was an interesting experience as the more you eat, the lower the price of each sushi and with different combinations, you get to taste a variety of sushi at an affordable price, but the place gets quite crowded during lunch due to this promotion, and the service can take a while, but it is not so slow that you get frustrated
