Victor Famous Fried Chicken Wing Rice and Hainanese Chicken Rice

I can never resist a good fried chicken wing and my resolve for a diet always melts whenever I walk past a fried chicken shop. Over the years, with the introduction of global brands like KFC, Texas Chicken and even Korean fried chicken, many of the younger generations are not aware of traditional chicken wings like Ke Le chicken or Carona’s Fried Chicken Wing Rice

Every so often, I do get cravings for these traditional chicken wings and my go-to stall is always Eng Kee in Redhill or my neighbouring hawker stalls. Only recently my colleague brought me to this stall on Veerasamy Road and memories of the popular Carona’s Fried Chicken Wing came back to me

After the closure of Carona Fried Chicken Wing Rice, the original owner started Victor’s Fried Chicken Wing Rice & Hainanese Chicken Rice in 2011 in this humble coffee shop stall. Open every day, the owner ensured to keep their meals affordable by keeping to this small stall in the coffeeshop because of the low rent

Their chicken wings are marinated overnight to ensure the flavours are deeply permeated into the chicken wings. The most popular menu is their fried chicken wing rice priced at SGD 4.50 and standalone chicken wing at SGD 1.80 per piece. They have also added other menus like roasted chicken rice, sweet and sour chicken rice and lemon chicken rice to cater to more customers

The fried chicken wings rice comes with 2 pieces of fried chicken wings on top of flavorful rice cooked in chicken broth. You need to eat the rice with its special chilli sauce as it adds an additional depth of flavour. The rice itself has a nice aroma of chicken oil and is similar to most chicken rice. The chicken has a thin batter which provides just enough crunch and crispiness to each bite to reveal succulent flavourful meat. The meat is seasoned well to give a light savoury flavour which is perfect with the chilli sauce and rice. The chilli sauce is a nice balance of spiciness and garlic with a light tangy finish which is great for cutting away the oiliness of the rice

Overall, this is a very nostalgic meal as the taste of childhood brings back fantastic memories. The chicken is still fried perfectly and with each mouthful of flavourful rice, you feel a sense of contentment which does not burn a hole in your pocket
