The French American Bakery

The stories and reels of this hot chocolate drink topped with burnt marshmallow was appearing on my feed almost every day; I told myself, I really had to visit them to see what the hype was all about

Located along the colourful Haji Lane, The French American Bakery was opened in 2021 offering a range of classic French and American pastries, breads and dessert tarts. Opened by Chef Aishah who boasts 15 years of culinary experience as a pastry chef, the bakery made a name for itself with daily queues for their Muslim-friendly bakes

With so many good bakeries in Singapore, I did not notice them until the recent viral torched marshmallow hot chocolate drink so I popped by to grab the viral drink and a couple of their bake

With no dine-in seating, all customers have to take away the goodies and with a strict 5-person in-the-shop policy, the long queue of customers wait patiently by the side of the shop with the delicious pastries stacked in front of the full-length window

I waited less than 10 minutes before it was my turn in to the shop and I was immediately greeted with a waft of heavenly smell from the freshly baked goods. I was spoilt for choices and had to make my choices fast due to the long queue of customers still outside the shop

The first thing we had to taste test was the viral chocolate marshmallow drink which was marshmallow piped onto a cup of hot milk chocolate drink and subsequently hand-torched to create the charred top of the marshmallow. My expectations were high only to be disappointed as the hot chocolate was not thick enough as it was more milky and light. I expected the marshmallow to be like the BBQ ones but it was not sweet enough or melted enough and has a slight tangy flavour which spoils the overall flavour in my opinion. My nephew who is a chocolate drink fanatic did not even finish his cup

I bought home quite a variety of their bakes from pastries to cakes and buns but only managed to take pictures of a couple of them as the rest was gobbled up by my family. It is a pity we were not allowed to eat them in the store as the texture definitely changed when I reached home and reheated them. While the pastries are still buttery and flakey, I found the bakes a bit dense and not fluffy and crispy enough. While they are not bad bakes, they were also not over-the-moon fantastic as I have had many bakes which were more breathtaking from other bakeries

Overall, the bakery does serve some nice bakes but not unforgettable enough for me to revisit them again and I was highly disappointed by the hot chocolate drink which is probably only good for photos
