Kam’s Roast Icon Siam

Kam’s Roast is my go-to place for roast geese in Hong Kong whenever I am visiting and the long queues do not deter me from getting a bite of the fleshy and juicy meat. When they announced their entry into Singapore with their first outlet, I was over the moon as it meant satisfying my cravings without needing a plane ticket. My happiness was short-lived as I realised they were not selling roast goose in Singapore due to importation and license issues. The outlets in Singapore only offered the usual roast duck and meats

When I was in Bangkok Icon Siam, I realised they had Kam’s roast as well and with a heavy heart, I asked the staff if they sold roast goose and to my delight they said yes. It was the only chance for me to satisfy my cravings for 5 years so we quickly asked for a table

Located on the 6th floor of ICON Siam where multiple award-winning restaurants from all over Asia are gathered together to form an exclusive food street. Some of the restaurants included Korean, Chinese, Japanese and Thai specialised cuisines and every single restaurant had a queue during meal times. The concept of this floor was open concept for each restaurant so the entire space looks like a giant food garden with intricate decorations and designs suitable for the restaurants

With 9 consecutive years of 1 Michelin star wards in Hong Kong and Macau, my expectations of the meal were high. I was expecting the meal to stay close to the original restaurant in Hong Kong in terms of flavours. With a window concept for the kitchen, you can see the rows of gorgeous meats hung up as well as the chef preparing your order

Aside from the roast goose, one of the dishes I really miss from Hong Kong is the lava centre century eggs. I would always return with crates of the century egg whenever I travel to Hong Kong so when I saw this on the menu, I made sure to order one to try. When I had the first bite, I was elated as the familiar flavours of the century egg hit my palate. The egg was bouncy and chewy with a creamy yolk which was perfect when paired with the pickled ginger

The next dish is something I have not seen on the Hong Kong Branch menu but is a dish I absolutely love. Since Singapore does not sell duck blood, we can only get this dish in either Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong and China. The Kam’s Roast version is the mala chilli duck blood which was extremely fragrant and delicious. There was no funky smell or taste of the blood tofu so it was silky and smooth which paired well with the mala sauce

The main star of the meal was the roast goose and we got half of the bird. The moment it was served, we can see the beautiful glistening crispy skin. The moment we bite into a piece of meat, the melted fats and duck juices burst into the mouth giving an explosion of flavours. The succulent meat combined well with the fats leaving behind a fragrant layer of oil on the lips and mouth. While the goose was fabulous, it was somewhat lacking in comparison to the one in Hong Kong and I cannot put my finger on it

Lastly, we also ordered a mixed platter of roast pork and char siew which were crispy and extremely juicy. The roast pork had crispy skin and a good mix of fats and lean meat which was well balanced in flavours. The char siew was a little sweet but had nice charred bits which are my favourite when eating char siew

Overall, while the experience at Kam’s Roast in ICON Siam did not meet my expectations compared to the Hong Kong store, the food is still great and can satisfy my cravings for roast goose. The price however is slightly more pricey as compared to having them in Hong Kong
