Canton i

We were looking for a quick dinner at City Square Mall as we wanted to be close to the train station for our train back to Singapore and we chanced upon Canton i. After looking at the menu, we were reminded of the Crystal Jade Kitchen chain in Singapore as the offerings were pretty similar

Decorated as a no-frill restaurant, you cannot really tell this is a Chinese cuisine restaurant except for the red ceiling and typical chopsticks and white porcelain spoons and plate setting on the tables

Some of the signature dishes of the restaurant include their roasted London duck and roast meats as they proudly don the first few pages of the menu

For our carbohydrates, we ordered a bowl of pork century egg porridge and plain dry noodles. Served with a small plate of crispy fritters, the porridge is extremely smooth and well-seasoned. The noodles were springy with a great chew and the fragrant onion oil and soy sauce were perfect adding savoury flavour to the noodles

We ordered a couple of dim sum choices like the X.O sauce fried radish cake, steamed prawn rice roll and steamed spicy chicken feet. The fried radish cake has a nice charred flavour with the beansprouts adding a nice fresh crunch to the dish itself. The rice rolls and chicken feet were nice but nothing too extraordinary

We also ordered half a duck with the bones removed and some roast pork. The roast pork has crispy skin with juicy fats and salty lean meat. While the roast pork is delicious, the fats did not melt in my mouth so it is quite greasy. The roast duck was also delicious with crispy skin and the sauce has a nice herbal flavour which is infused into the meat

Overall, Canton i is a decent Cantonese cuisine casual restaurant for a quick meal and if I were to close my eyes, I would think I was eating at Crystal Jade. From the menu and the style of cooking, I was left wondering if their chef was from Crystal Jade previously. So those who love Crystal Jade food offerings can visit Canton i for similar dishes at a cheaper price tag due to the favourable exchange rate
