Scissors Cut Curry Rice – Beach Road since 1930

Founded in 1930, Scissors Cut Curry Rice differentiate itself from the competition with its signature curry gravy which is a unique blend of 15 handpicked spices, fresh coconut and soya sauce. The smooth flavourful gravy with subtle sweetness is a recipe passed down for 3 generations and is perfect when drizzled over warm rice and delicious side dishes

Famously named after their metal scissors used to cut food, the new outlet is their first ever outlet opened as a standalone shop in a shopping mall. The rest of the outlets are either in coffee shops, food courts or hawker centres. Located in the basement of Vivocity next to Fairprice Extra, the storefront has a modern look with some traditional elements like the old-school mosaic tiles used at the food counter and pictures and articles from their first store at Beach Road

The shop is not very big as half of the space is taken up by the food counter where you order your food. There are a couple of tables available if you wish to dine in but they are limited to a maximum of 20 persons at any one time

For the convenience of their customers, they have curated a few popular basic sets for customers to choose from; Set A which includes their signature fried pork or chicken cutlet, Set B which includes their braised pork belly and Set C which includes the curry chicken. There are other more lavish sets which include a combination of the signature dishes so the price point is higher than the basic sets

Other than their signature dishes like fried pork or chicken cutlets, braised pork belly and curry chicken, the store also offers other dishes like sambal brinjal, lady’s fingers, stir-fried beansprouts, braised mushrooms and more. Scissors Cut’s signature curry is prepared daily in three big batches – morning, afternoon, and evening and the final sauce on the rice is made by combining 4 different pots of sauces which is the secret to their delicious sauce

I have not eaten at the store but have bought takeaways quite often. The meals come packed in these environmentally friendly paper boxes and you can inform the staff to pack the gravy separately so the rice and cutlet do not get soggy when you reach home. The sets are priced at SGD 5.80 and include vegetables, fried eggs and a choice of meat. Personally, I do feel that the servings are quite small for the price but the quality and taste of the food is considerably good and the gravy really does complete the meal. The braised meat is very thorough in flavour as you can taste the soy flavour and the meat is soft to the bite while the cutlets are crispy and still juicy. The curry is creamy and smooth with a nice coconutty flavour backing up the spice of the curry to make it the perfect gravy for the meal

Overall, Scissors Cut Curry Rice is definitely one of the better Hainan Curry rice I have eaten with their gravy being the highlight. If you do have their rice at one of the coffee shops, I do believe the serving size is slightly more generous compared to the one at the mall
