Home-cooked Meals Under $10 Part 2

Here’s my 2nd post for meals under $10 and I would like to say again that these are really simple to make dishes who people who do not cook. My plating and presentation are really generic as it is what I cook for my family and not made just for the blog. While thinking of what to cook, most people will think that it is very difficult to have seafood under $10 so I decided to try to include prawns and vegetables.

The first dish is one of my favourite dish Cantonese pan-fried tomato prawns. Ingredients needed:

300grams of prawns for SGD 5.56

3 tomatoes for SGD 1

Oyster sauce and minced garlic for SGD 0.50

The total cost of dish = SGD 7.06

Firstly, clean the prawns by cutting out the legs and the sharp areas at the front of the prawn’s head

Using about 2 tablespoons of cooking oil, pan fry the prawns in medium heat till they are 80% cooked.

They are ready when they turn red and the shell looks slightly translucent and brown. Remove the prawns from the pan and set aside for later.

Using the same oil used to fry the prawns which is full of fragrance now, stir fry 1 tablespoons of minced garlic for 1 min.

Add in the diced tomatoes and let them fry in the oil for 3 to 5 mins.

The tomatoes will turn mushy and soft and the juices will come out so you have a gravy. At this point, you can add 2 tablespoons of water and 1 tablespoon of oyster sauce.

Add in the prawns at this point and fry them to fully cook the prawns and let the prawns simmer with the tomato gravy. Turn on the heat to high to reduce the gravy and you can serve them in 1 to 2  mins.

You can sprinkle some spring onions on top of the prawns as a garnish when you serve them

The 2nd dish is something you see commonly at hawker centres and is fairly easy to cook as well. The ingredients needed for fried beancurd with beansprouts

wp-1588068091889.jpg

1 square of beancurd at SGD 1

100-200 grams of beansprouts at SGD 1

Minced garlic, oyster sauce at SGD 50

The total cost of this dish is at SGD 2.50

wp-1588068091924.jpg

Fry the beancurd which has been cut into cubes until golden brown. The beancurd fries well at medium heat.

wp-1588068092010.jpg

Remove them when they are fried till golden brown for later

wp-1588068091947.jpg

Remove some oil from the pan and leave only about 1 tablespoon worth and stir fry 1 tablespoon of minced garlic.

wp-1588068091974.jpg

When the garlic starts to turn brown, add in the beansprouts and stir fry them for 1 min

wp-1588068092037.jpg

Add in 1 tablespoon of oyster sauce and stir fry the sprouts to make sure the flavours are mixed thoroughly.

wp-1588068092063.jpg

Add in the fried bean curd and stir fry them for another 1 min before serving. You can add pepper and 1 teaspoon of light soy sauce if you like a saltier dish.

wp-1588068092091.jpg

I like my sprouts slightly crunchy so I do not over fry them so you should not fry them for more than 3  mins in total.

As the tomato prawns are quite heavy in flavours, the lighter flavoured bean sprouts provide a good clean balance. The portions shown are just nice for my family of 4 who are all quite small eaters.

The total cost of the 2 dishes is at SGD 9.56
