Dian Xiao Er Restaurant

It’s weekend again and time for sharing good meals with friends and family. One of my favourite Chinese restaurants serving the best herbal duck in Singapore is Dian Xiao Er.

The name ‘Dian Xiao Er’ represents waiter in ancient China where patrons used to shout ‘Xiao Er’ to get attention the servers at the rest stops along arduous journeys between towns.

There are many outlets for Dian Xiao Er in Singapore. The decor of the restaurants resembles a rustic inn just like the ancient pit stops in China with wooden furniture and cloth banners

There are set menus available both for lunch and dinner featuring some of their most popular choices. Prices are set based on which menu you choose as well as the number of persons.

You can also order the a la carte dishes which has a huge range of items from soup, meat, fish, vegetables and speciality menus but the set menu is definitely a value for money

The herbal roast duck is a must-try with 3 herbal options – American ginseng, Angelica herb and the ten wonder herb.

The duck comes soaked in the herbal sauce which is both sweet and savoury with strong herbal flavours. The duck is succulent with nicely roasted skin and lean meat soaked generously with sauce.

The spinach with chicken stock and 2 eggs ( salted egg, century egg ) is fried nicely with a light gravy

The fish slices in soy sauce and fried onions was very fresh and light. The flavours were simple but complimented the fish very well

We had the fish maw thick soup which was creamy but quite light. I would have liked it to be slightly more flavourful.

We ordered additional fried vermicelli for my friend who did not take rice which came with the set. The noodles had strong umami but too dry for my liking.

Overall, Dian Xiao Er has very good dishes for a nice family meal.
