苏小柳手工点心(汇智分院)- Sue Dim Sum

When in Shanghai, you definitely need to go for their soup dumplings (xiaolongbao), and since we were not in the tourist areas, we settled for the nearest restaurant, which offered the dish

Located within the shopping mall just next to our hotel, we went to Sue dimsum, locally known as 苏小柳手工点心. Opened in 2016, the soup dumping scene in Shanghai was already overly crowded with the OG brands like Nanxiang, Jia Jia and Yang’s dumpling. Fast forward to now, with multiple outlets across Shanghai, Sue Dim Sum has proven that their concept of modern fuss-free dining paired with traditional taste works for the customers

The outlet we went to has a bright and minimalistic approach when it comes to decor. Tables and chairs were planned out for maximum efficiency to serve as many customers as possible. They have a drinks bar where customers serve themselves at the counter for different teas available. Carbonated drinks are payable. We also got our own plates and cutlery from the counter, as the staff were too busy during meal times

We started with starters like the mixed greens with Chinese yams and the cold sliced pork with dipping sauce. The greens were crunchy and surprisingly nicely seasoned without any bitter vegetable taste. The pork slice was chewy and flavourful, but a bit tough to bite into

The next items are the highlights, which include the mixed flavours soup dumplings, crab roe soup dumplings and chilli soup dumplings. The skin of the dumplings was soft and quite thin, and the different flavours were interesting. The crab roe ones were the most popular, but I did not find them extremely outstanding. The quality was ok with sufficient stuffing, but it was not over the moon. Based on the pricing of the dumplings, I can understand why they are popular for a quick meal, as the quality is not bad

Next, we had the meatball soup and dry scallion noodles with dried shrimp. The soup was quite bland, although the meatballs were bouncy and fresh in flavour. The noodles were fantastic, and I would say a better surprise than the dumplings. The texture was chewy, and the scallion oil and fried scallions gave it a fantastic fragrance. The dried shrimps gave it additional umami flavour, which made this simple bowl of noodles very delicious

Overall, I wouldn’t mind having a quick meal here for affordable prices, but I wasn’t extremely impressed by the dumplings, as they were as good as many other restaurants here in Singapore. I had Yang’s dumplings, and they were better in my opinion
