The Castle Restaurant and Tea Room – Thame Valley Khao Yai

As we had no transport after our driver dropped us off at Thame Valley, we decided to have our dinner at the in-house restaurant The Castle

We walked to the restaurant from our accommodation block and entered through the back gates. There were both indoor and outdoor seats but we chose the indoor ones

There was a live band playing indoors and the interior was spacious and cosy with black chandeliers lighting up the entire space. There was also a bar counter for guests who like to sit at the high stools

The restaurant serves Western cuisine and has quite a good variety of entrees, sides, and mains as well as pasta or fusion Thai food for those who prefer more carbohydrates in their meal

I started my meal with pumpkin soup which is quite milky and buttery with a light taste of pumpkin. It doesn’t taste bad but I like my pumpkin soup with more natural sweetness from the pumpkin

For my mains, I ordered the pork chop which was served with a side of mash and some grilled vegetables and brown sauce for my chop. The pork chop flavours were on point and the meat was succulent and juicy. It was generally a nice piece of pork chop as I always get pork chops which are too rubbery or tough. The mash was quite mediocre and I find the side serving of vegetables too little

I tried my friend’s baked pasta and the flavours were quite mediocre. The pasta took extremely long to be served and we had to remind the staff a couple of times before it was finally served. The pasta was cooked al dente and the sauce was extremely creamy with a nice burnt cheese top but the flavours were just a little off the mark, making it a substandard baked pasta dish

We also ordered a basket of fried calamari and seafood as a sharing snack and the seafood was done rather well. The batter was light and crispy and the seafood was fresh. The basket of fried food was served with ketchup and mayonnaise as they were the perfect dipping sauce for the fried items. There was nothing too extraordinary about the dish and nothing too bad to point out

Lastly, I ordered their iced chocolate drink which was pretty good as the chocolate was thick and creamy and the sweetness was just right

Overall, we paid SGD69 for the meal which is considered expensive in Thailand but at the same time acceptable at holiday resorts. The dishes are a hit or miss as my pork chop was decent but my friend’s pasta was mediocre. What I liked was the service of the staff as well as the cosy environment at the restaurant as well as the convenience of the restaurant being in the same compound as my accommodation
