If you ask a Singaporean where the best Chicken Rice stall is located, you will most probably get different answers. While there are a couple of famous tourist spots, they are not really the places locals go to for their chicken rice fixes

One of the more local ways for Singapore families to have chicken rice is to have it together with steamboat, as broiled chicken with steamboat is reminiscent of traditional Chinese Reunion Dinners for Cantonese, where family surrounds the table for a meal. Always on the lookout for a shop which offers both chicken rice and steamboat together, I found Feng Sheng, which is open 24 hours

Located along the same stretch of road as the famous Selegie beancurd, the store is small and narrow and is not ideal for big groups, but cosy enough for groups of 4 to 6 people. There are also outdoor seating areas, which are also limited. This first smaller outlet opened in 2023, and the brand has since opened a 2nd bigger outlet along East Coast road

The menu focuses on the chicken rice as well as combo sets offering steamboat items with either one or half a chicken. The stall offers both steamed and roasted chicken as well as fried chicken cutlets for the modern eater. There are also some stir-fried dishes for those wanting more varieties like fried vegetables, fried chicken wings, omelette, tofu, and chicken satay

We ordered a combo with 1 chicken, but had the option to make it half steamed and half roasted. Instead of the watery soy sauce, the chicken meat is drizzled with a starchy garlic sauce, which is savoury and garlicy at the same time. The meat is smooth and tender, and paired well with the sauce. On top of that, their chicken rice chilli sauce and minced ginger were also perfect to pair with the fragrant rice

The steamboat was served in a hot claypot, which kept the soup hot and bubbling on top of the portable stove. The set came with the usual mushrooms and vegetables, and since we opted for the herbal soup base, we could see the herbs floating about the soup. Different steamboat combos feed different numbers of people, and like traditional Chinese steamboat, the sets come with vegetables, mushrooms, meat, fishballs, basic seafood and some beancurds
Overall, the chicken rice did not disappoint as the tender chicken paired well with their fragrant, fluffy rice without being overly oily. The steamboat added a homely, hearty warmth to the whole meal, which also helped wash down any grease that might come from the chicken rice. The soup from the steamboat was light and not overpowering in flavour, and reminded me of something we would have at home
