Malayan Settlement

After our meal at Mimi, we looked around for a place to settle for coffee and found Malayan Settlement as the only suitable option for our mum, who was in a wheelchair. Most of the other cafes were located on the 2nd floor without a lift, or it was difficult to bring her into the restaurant

Although there was a step going into the cafe, the staff were very nice to come forward to help us lift my mum and also offer help with the wheelchair. Luckily, there were only 3 steps, and we were able to handle ourselves

There were seats outside as well, which we did not have to go up the steps, but since it was in the afternoon, we preferred to sit indoors for the air-conditioning

The cafe is huge with many sitting areas, and they also have a few private rooms for groups, and the staff was very nice to offer us the private room so we could store the wheelchair and have the space to ourselves

For drinks, we had the matcha latte, hot chocolate and gula melaka latte. The drinks were general ok with nothing too out of the ordinary or surprising. The flavours were decent

As my mum was still hungry, we got this cod fish in sour assam soup. The fish was first pan-fried till the skin was crispy before laying it on a bowl of tangy soup with mushrooms and vegetables. This was on a special menu and not the regular menu, and while it was quite pricey at SGD 48, it was a whole piece of cod fish, and the fish was cooked perfectly with very tender meat and crispy skin, which was paired perfectly with the tangy soup

We wanted to try the putu piring cake, but it was sold out, so we got the ondeh ondeh cake, which came with shredded coconut, crumbs, and fresh fruits, as well as drizzled with gula melaka sauce. The cake was rich and nutty and was soft with an explosion of gulu melaka flavours, both from the sauce and the cake fillings

Overall, the food was pretty nice since we only tried 1 dish and 1 dessert, but most importantly, the atmosphere was pretty and perfect for pictures. The staff were so friendly and helpful that we wished we had the stomach to order more food. We will visit again to try the other menu items
