八條老宅麻辣鍋二號店

With plenty of mala hot pot restaurants in Taipei, it is best to follow the locals to their recommended venues to get a good meal

Located in the Zhongshan District, this restaurant is quite popular with locals for its good service, nice broth and affordable prices

With a small and quaint space, it is important to make reservations during peak meal times. They have different outlets, so each outlet does not house too many tables. This outlet could only seat 6 tables of guests, and it seems that they have seating on the 2nd level as well

There is quite a huge variety of dishes to order, including the usual favourites like pork and beef, shrimp paste, mushrooms, corn, cabbage, potatoes and other noodle items. Some of the special dishes they have included are aged tofu and blood tofu

The broth was quite spicy for me, so I mostly ate from the non-spicy soup base. The ingredients were fresh and well portioned. I like that the staff’s attention to detail was top-notch. As there were two of us who did not take beef, they served us some blood tofu that had not been soaked in the mala soup base. As most mala soup bases in China and Taiwan are made with beef oil, they were careful to ensure the blood tofu we wanted was not soaked. I do not know if this was the standard in other hot pot restaurants, as I seldom make such a request. I usually just dip off the oil in the non-spicy broth

Overall, while the meal was not overly outstanding or special, the atmosphere was cosy and casual, and the service staff were attentive and efficient. I personally still prefer Wulao Pot better, but when it comes to hot pot, it comes down to personal palates
