Kai Garden

As the last round, we did not manage to try the dim sum from Kai Garden due to my forgetting to make a reservation. This time around, I made sure I called in early to get a table so I could bring my mum to try their dim sum

Located within the Marina Square shopping Mall, Kai Garden is right at the corner of the level away from the buzz in the central atrium. Identifying as a Cantonese fine dining restaurant, we had high expectations of the food here. Helmed and owned by renowned award-winning Group Executive Chef Fung Chi Keung, who was the previous Executive Chef of Paradise Group and Xin Yue, the food here is expected to be a mix of traditional Cantonese classics and new twists and innovative dishes

This space allows the restaurant to have gorgeous views of the Marina skyline as it is at the edge of the building. The restaurant makes full use of this advantage with floor-to-ceiling windows along the side of the restaurant, giving the tables around the windows fantastic views both in the day and the night. The restaurant looks small, with only a couple of tables open for seating and a couple more rooms for private dining. I have also seen them put out tables within the mall outside of the restaurant to accommodate more customers, so make reservations early for a table within the restaurant

We started our meal with the general dim sum orders like the steamed black bean pork ribs, steamed chicken feet with chilli, steamed char siew buns, steamed custard bun and steamed rice rolls. They were classic and did well in satisfying my mum’s palate by being on point with the flavours

The next batch of dishes was a mix of modern fusion and classic dim sum favourites like the deep-fried pork floss brinjal, fried siew mai, crispy prawn and mango roll, X.O fried carrot cake and egg tarts. I do think I liked their modern fusion dishes more than the steamed ones as they brought more surprises in terms of flavours and texture. They were definitely more memorable compared to the steamed dishes; like the fried brinjal, I could not stop popping them into my mouth as the crispiness was exceptional, while this is the first time I had a pan-fried siew mai

The following dishes we ordered were roast pork and egg white stir-fried with crab meat. The roast pork was done well with a good ratio of fats and lean meat, and the egg white stir-fried with crab meat was also very delicious. I love this dish a lot, but not many restaurants make it except for very traditional Cantonese chefs. I was glad to find it here and done perfectly. There were strong umami flavours, which were balanced out with the egg white and yolk for a creamy and tangy dish

Desserts were another pretty affair as most of them came plated exquisitely, especially the lemon mousse. They also offered hot desserts like Almond milk, which was perfect for the elderly. Overall, the desserts were not overly sweet and great as a completion to the whole meal

Overall, the atmosphere at Kai Garden was wonderful, with a great view of the Singapore skyline. The service staff were also extremely helpful and attentive. With a great menu and delicious food, Kai Garden is somewhere I will visit again
