Foh San Restaurant

When it comes to dim sum in Ipoh, most locals and foreigners will be familiar with Foh San as it is one of the 2 famous dim sum restaurants in Ipoh. Directly opposite of each other, I have only tried dim sum in Ipoh once at Foh San as it was quite difficult to get a table at Ming Court

Over the years, I have heard that many locals prefer to have their local dim sum fixes in other restaurants not located in the central as they offer more affordable and delicious dim sum. Personally, I tried one of the recommended restaurants and I really did not find a huge difference from the ones from Foh San so I decided to bring my friends to Foh San for breakfast during this trip

Foh San is located in a standalone building which looks like a Majestic community house. The entrance is adorned by small counters selling boxed parties and cookies for customers to bring home as souvenirs or gifts. The entire restaurant is spacious and has seating to house many customers. Servers will come by your table with little push carts to upsell different kinds of dim sum

We ordered the usual dishes like pork and century egg congee, shrimp rice rolls, steamed char siew buns and yam buns. The congee was smooth and flavourful with chunks of ingredients which was perfect for breakfast. The rice roll and steamed buns were nice but pretty general

For steamed items, we ordered the siew mai, har giow, beancurd roll and crab siew mai. They were generous in their fillings but the flavour and taste were general and nothing too outstanding

For the fried items, I felt the flavours were generally better and more well done. We had the yam ball, savoury meatball pastry, egg tart, pan-fried carrot cake and pan-fried yong tau foo. I personally liked the pan-fried yong tau foo a lot as it has a nice savoury black bean sauce which complemented the crispy exterior of the yong tau foo. The egg tart was creamy and eggy with a layered tart base which is similar to the texture of a croissant

Overall, the dining experience at Foh San was pleasant with a high ceiling and multiple ceiling fans to help blow away the heat while you enjoy dim sum and tea at your own pace. The restaurant is spacious enough for you to have private space away from the next table without a mad rush to grab dim sum. The servers were generally polite and helpful as well and the pricing is considered not too exorbitant
