Nam Heong is known for its iconic white coffee and egg tarts and as one of the pioneers of Ipoh white coffee, the shop is constantly packed with tourists and locals. Founded in the 1930s, from their first outlet in Concubine Lane, the brand has since opened up 7 other outlets. With the customer’s love for their foamy white coffee, they also created the Old Town White Coffee brand which has since been acquired by a Dutch company

Located at the intersection of Jalan Bandar Timah and Persiaran Bijeh Timah as the corner coffee shop, the original shop is tiny and packed. Read my short review on my first visit here. Since my first visit, they have expanded the shop to include another coffee shop on the lane just behind the original shop. We were queuing at the main shop until an employee brought us to the newer shop behind
The newer extension is more spacious and has been renovated with fuss-free but modern decoration. Many more seats are available for customers and more service staff to usher and serve customers. The drinks counter is set at one side of the shop with the main oven baking the egg tarts and other pastries at the front of the shop
Other than dim sum and egg tarts, there are also other hot dishes available like wanton noodles, dumpling noodles, pan mee, curry chicken noodles, prawn noodles and kway teow. You can also pick your fresh pastries from the counter after they are freshly baked

As it was my last day in Ipoh, I wanted to have a last bowl of their smooth hor fun so I ordered a shrimp hor fun with soup which was very light yet flavourful. The hor fun itself does not disappoint with such silkiness and smoothness that it slips down your throat. The light prawn broth also complements the hearty dish
This next dish my friend ordered took me by surprise as it was absolutely delightful. The dry pan mee came with a light flavourful soup which complemented the dry noodles which were punchy with umami flavours. The noodles were springy and chewy with the minced meat and braised mushrooms bursting with savoury goodness. The crunch from the ikan bilis also added the needed texture. I was trying the noodles but could not stop myself from taking a 2nd bite
My friend had the kaya toast which was done in the old-fashioned coffee shop way that has a certain thickness to the bread. The kaya was light and not too sweet. The egg tarts were served warm with a flakey crust and soft custard centres. The custard was very smooth and eggy in flavour and was a great tea-time snack. I also had to try their egg custard pudding which was soft and creamy topped with a caramel sweet sauce. The egg flavour was lighter in the pudding with a more milky flavour. Last but not least, the coffee did not disappoint with its smooth frothy milk and strong coffee taste
Overall, I really like the food at Nam Heong and with the new extension, it is much easier to get a seat and enjoy the different types of food on the menu. With the pan mee as a surprise, I would be interested to try other items
