Comida Toast

Regarding breakfast shops, Taiwan has plenty; from the famous Yonghe soy milk and fried fritters to the super long-queued Fu Hang Soy Milk. There are many regular smaller breakfast shops which are visited by locals and one such modern shop kept showing up on social feeds

Located in the Ximen area, it is a 10-minute walk from the crowded Ximending area and if you did not learn about the shop from social media, there is hardly any foot traffic around the area. We made our way there by Google Maps and it was located in the audio shop zones which are not heavily populated so I would have never chanced upon this breakfast shop by myself

The shop is small and cosy with no big signboard and directional signage. It was along a row of pretty dilapidated shophouses and I would have missed out on them if there was no crowd at the entrance. The storefront is simple with a large window and bench for waiting customers. The white tiles stand out from the row of metal shutters giving it quite a character

The shop interior is small and cosy with only 3 long tables and a window table with tall stools. We took a number from the staff at the entrance and waited for our turn to be seated. As the tables are huge, expect to be sharing space with strangers. Orders are made at the counter and delivered to the table when ready

We ordered both coffee and tea and it was served in a no-frills white cup which was sealed to prevent any spills. As the space is limited, most customers gobbled down their food and take the drink on the go. This explains why the drinks are all served in takeaway sealed cups. In terms of taste, the flavours were refreshing but nothing too extraordinary

The price range of their sandwiches is between TWD 70 to TWD 100 and you can choose the meat, egg or cheese to be added to the sandwich. Each sandwich is made upon order to make sure it is hot when served therefore waiting time can be up to 30 minutes. I had the pork and egg sandwich without cheese as I was feeling stuffy that morning. The pork was a super thin slice of meat which resembled ham and luncheon meat and there was a nice charred flavour from the grilling. The runny egg gave the sandwich an uplift as I found the sandwich a little bit on the dry side as there I could not taste any additional sauce or butter except the runny yolk.

Overall, the sandwiches felt more like a homemade breakfast and were comforting and cosy but I would not specially queue for it as there was nothing too spectacular about the items served here
