GO K BBQ Amoy

My colleague highly recommended this Korean barbeque outlet as it was his go-to restaurant for quality meats. I was craving for barbeque one weekend and decided to just pop by the outlet for a meal

Located along the shop houses on Amoy Street, Go K BBQ has no lack of competition as the area has now become another Korean restaurant street just like Tanjung Pagar. There are at least another 5 Korean BBQ restaurants along the same street and each one is equally bustling with customers during meal times. The outlet offers chilled barley tea to customers waiting for tables outside of the restaurant which is a considerate action in our swelting weather

There are 2 entrances to the Go K BBQ, one of which is more classy and upmarket and serves Jjajiang Myeong and BBQ while the other one serves only BBQ. We booked a table at the BBQ outlet which is more like your regular Korean restaurant with the brightly lit space and wooden tables and chairs. The thing which is missing is the exhaust pipes meant to reduce the smoke from the grill as they have internalised exhaust systems within the grill. The first counter that greets you at the entrance is the butcher chiller where you can see all the fresh meat offered that day. The butcher will also cut the meat upon each order to ensure you get the best and freshest meat

The restaurant only serves aged meat and premium meat. For pork, they only have the Spanish Iberico and Duroc. For beef, they have Australian Waygu and USDA Prime meat. The meats are aged using the wet aging method which tenderizes the meat to near-perfection. It ensures that the moisture within the cuts stays within the meat itself. I like the simple decor of using the old grill plates as part of the outlet decoration with staff writings or customers leaving their comments

After placing our order, we were served 4 side dishes, a plate of condiments, fresh lettuce and a small aluminium bowl of garlic in butter which was left to grill on the plate. The side dishes include cabbage kimchi, radish kimchi, pickled radish, pickled onion and fish cakes. For condiments, the plate includes: chilli powder, salt and bean paste

Other complimentary items given include the clay pot steamed egg and fresh kimchi mixed with shredded cabbage, lettuce, beansprouts, chilli powder and some savoury dressing. The egg was fluffy and soft but slightly bland in flavour

They have an individual and group-friendly menu with individual meat orders or meat sets for bigger groups. As it was our first time eating here, we decided to try all the different port cuts offered in their menu. The pork set C includes 360g of Black pork belly, 150g of Black pork jowl and 180g of Black pork neck. The set came with a couple of mushrooms, leek and rice cake. The restaurant is fully serviced, where the staff grills all the meat for you until it is at the perfect doneness for each piece before leaving the cooked ones on top of a metal rack within the hot plate to keep the meat warm. The meat is stronger in the natural meat flavours and the premium cuts give it a balanced portion of fats and meat which gives the grilled meat an outburst of flavours as you chew on the meat. Personally, I prefer the pork collar more than the other cuts of meat so I ordered a 2nd individual portion of just the pork collar

I also ordered a spicy buckwheat cold noodle to help wash down the oil from the meat. As I do not take beef, the staff helped me double-check with the kitchen twice to ensure the broth does not include beef broth. Since the broth was not a meat broth, the noodles tend to be lighter than the usual cold noodles but it was perfect when paired with the greasy meat. The noodles are springy and chewy and the radish slices and cucumber slices add a great crunch to the noodles

Overall, the Go K BBQ experience was one of my most enjoyable Korean barbeque sessions. The staff grilling the meat was professional and most of the meat was grilled to perfection. The environment was not greasy due to the exhaust system incorporated into the grill system and most importantly, the price of the premium meat was comparable to what other restaurants were offering as well. If you are looking for an enjoyable Korean barbeque session, I would recommend Go K BBQ
