Big Fish Small Fish

It is not easy to find good fish and chips in Singapore and ever since I had good quality ones in London, the ones in Singapore are really hard to match

I remember seeing ads for this restaurant when I was passing by Bugis but never had the chance to visit. It was by pure coincidence that I was looking for a lunch location In Bugis and I thought of the Big Fish Small Fish restaurant. Located on the top floor of Bugis Mall, the restaurant shares the space with Eighteen Chef, a nail salon and a fitness centre

The whole restaurant seats approximately 50 diners and has an open concept where there are no additional glass partitions separating the restaurant from the rest of the space on the top floor

They offer signature fish and chips with a choice of fish as well as sides and other items like grilled fish, chicken and steak, pasta, salads and soup. They will also explain to you the taste and texture of each of the different fishes

There was an option to add on a couple of dollars to make the main dish a set meal which includes a soup and drink. The soup of the day when I visited was mushroom soup and I added a top-up to get the pink skies lemonade which came with cream strawberry topping with mini marshmallows. The beverage was very sweet because of the cream and marshmallows but the lemonade did balance it out. The soup had mushroom chunks and was thick and creamy but was lacking in the mushroom flavour so it was more cream-tasting with a very light mushroom taste

For my fish, I selected the Haddock fish with mashed potatoes which required a top-up as the side which came with the fish was chips like those you snack on and it is the first time I have seen a fish and chips menu where you have to pay extra for fries. Back to the fish, it was a win as the batter was crispy and light with the perfect consistency which gave every bite of the fish a good crunch. The haddock was fresh and had a nice bouncy flake which was sweet when chewed on. The fish was really the saver of the dish as the mashed potatoes were quite mediocre. They were not much of a flavour and it was mixed with some kind of grain so it was chunky and grainy

Overall, I really like the fish of Big Fish Small Fish as they have pretty good quality and was cooked well with a crispy and thin batter. This single fact was enough for me to ignore the mediocrity of the sides and on top of this, the price is also considered quite affordable at SGD 18.90
