Fish Mart Sakuraya

I remember first eating at Fish Mart Sakuraya 10 years ago and I was intrigued by the idea of choosing my own fish and getting the chef to slice them into sashimi servings. I absolutely loved the food but back then it was a burden on my wallet

Fast forward to the current day, whenever I crave fresh quality sashimi, Fish Mart Sakuraya is one of the first restaurants to pop up in my mind. There are 4 outlets across Singapore and the nearest one to me is the one at Anchorpoint. They used to be on the first floor but have since shifted to the basement

As usual, the main highlight is the fresh fish chiller right at the entrance so customers can see what fishes are available before deciding to sit down for a meal. Within the restaurant, they have also sectioned out an area selling Japanese products like sauces, noodles, drinks and snacks. The restaurant seating plan layout is quite spacious and well-sectioned out to make sure each table has their own privacy

If you are not into sashimi, they do have other rice bowl selections and cooked food dishes on the menu

I love it whenever the fish I selected at the counter arrives nicely sliced and plated. I chose 4 items and each fish usually gives you an average of 8 to 10 pieces; depending on the size of fish you choose from the chiller. I picked medium-sized ones which cost less than SGD20 per plate so my entire platter here is about SGD50 or less. I like that the fish is sliced thick so you get a nice bite on each piece. The fish does not disappoint in terms of freshness or quality as they are flown in from Japan weekly

For my main, I ordered a Kyoto don which is topped with 3 kinds of speciality fish and salmon roe. I skipped the Chirashi Don which is the same price at SGD 15 as I do not like items like whelk or Octopus which are usually added into Chirashi Don as a random mix. The fish in the don is sliced more thinly but the number of slices given is quite generous as the fish-to-rice ratio is about 2 to 1. The don serving is smaller than others so if you just eat the don alone, some people might not find it filling enough

I was craving uni so I ordered the uni sushi to satisfy my cravings and they were quite generous with the uni pieces on each sushi I was surprised as the quality of the uni was really good and creamy with no metallic aftertaste at all. While it was not as sweet as the ones at Tsukiji market, I would say it is quite close in terms of creaminess and texture so it is really worth the price

Overall, the food at Fish Mart Sakuraya is of top quality which is well worth the price tag and the environment is cosy and comfortable with attentive staff. The variety of fresh fish available at the restaurant is vast and they are able to satisfy any sashimi cravings
