Team Labs Planet Tokyo

Team Labs Planet is an art museum that utilises digital technology and was established by teamLab and DMM.com in 2016. The first exhibition happened in Odaiba and expanded to Shin-Toyosu for the period from 2018 to 2020. New areas were added to the exhibition in 2021, and the dates have been extended 3 times from 2020 to 2022, 2023 and now finally to 2027

Since it was not located within Central Tokyo, and I was too lazy to make my own way to the location, I decided to buy my tickets via Klook. I bought the Skip the line premium pass as I could not get the timing which is suitable for my itinerary, and it cost SGD 73.75 ( current prices are at SGD 104.15. I also bought the 2-way transport from Ginza, which cost SGD 7.78. The ride took about 45 minutes to reach the exhibition hall

There was a long queue when we arrived, so I was pretty happy I bought the skip-the-line tickets to be able to zip all the way to the front of the queue and enter the location via a separate VIP door while the main crowd had to wait for their time slots to enter the space in batches

The first room was where the instructions were played to the group in both Japanese and English before you were ushered through another door to the exhibition. Just before you enter the main hall, you can visit the outdoor exhibit

This outdoor exhibit, called Moss Garden of Resonating Microcosms, is an art installation of ovoids, the differently shaped stones or objects, as you might call them. The ovoids basically reflect the world around them and change in appearance of the sunrise and sunset. The ovoids look pretty at sunset and at night when the different lights come on

The next area where you can wear your shoes and carry your gear is the Garden exhibit. An entire room full of mirrors was decorated with flowers and plants from the ceiling, with some of the plants on moving mechanisms to enable the space between the plants to change as you walk past them. It is almost like a flower maze where you discover spaces to move around to get to the exit of the room. It is also quite therapeutic to watch the flowers and plants move up and down

After the outdoor areas, we were led to the locker area and advised to keep all our belongings, as well as our shoes and socks, before entering the Water areas. Once you enter the water area of the indoor exhibit, it is quite dark. I attempted to take videos of the route we went on after entering, and it was quite tough handling the phone and holding my pants as the water reached the upper calf area for me. Remember to come in pants which can be rolled up to knee height to fully enjoy

The next rooms included the infinite crystal universe, where you can send a star to the installation using the Team Labs app within the art installation. The crystals also changed in lighting and movement as you walk through them

The next room was filled with water till my knee and was named the Drawing on surface of water created by the dance of Koi and people. This was very pretty but also disruptive as you might knock into people walking around if you only look at the floor while walking. I have also heard people might drop their phones and cameras into the water if they are not careful

The next room was the Expanding Three-dimensional Existence in Transforming Space – Flattening 3 Colors and 9 Blurred Colors which is huge air balls being pushed or thrown around and changing color from the different lights. It was quite fun pushing the balls around or hidding behind them with your friends but for anyone with claustophobia, this room can be slightly suffocating

The next room was best experienced lying down as it was called the Floating in the Falling Universe of Flowers. It was relaxing to lie down and watch the projection change and flowers that seem to float past your body and face. As the space is limited it is good to find a corner to lie down or you can risk having someone’s feet right next to you as it starts to get more crowded

Since my visit in December 2024, they have since added on more new areas with at least more than 15 new installations and experiences for visitors to interact and enjoy. We ended our trip here after the floating and falling universe room and proceeded to get our shoes and belongings. It was at night when we exited the hall and lights have came on for most of the outdoor exhibits. The queue was still quite long when we exited and we decided to grab a light bite at their outdoor tentage cafe before our pickup arrived

Overall, I quite enjoyed my time at Teams Labs and I would reccomend to cater enough time to really enjoy all the different rooms and exhibits or installations. As I had a pickup to return to Ginza, we rushed through some of the rooms but it would be quite nice to slow down and immerse fully in the different spaces before returning to reality. The exhibition however is not suitable for people with OCD since in many areas, people walk around bare footed and is encourage to touch the different installations
