Shangri-La The Chenrezig Hotel – 千瑞吉酒店

When my travel mate asked me if I was okay with booking the St Regis Hotel in Shangri La Yunnan, I was absolutely over the moon, especially when the price per room was really affordable. As we travelled towards Shangri-La, we realised that the hotel was not really an outlet of the St Regis chain of hotels, instead, it is a new boutique hotel built by a local Chinese company who loves the St Regis chain of hotels

The hotel was situated in an area which is not too far from the train station and the main attractions and is only opened in 2023, so it is fairly new and well maintained. There were still some external works going on surrounding the hotel as it is a developing area, but it was not extremely dusty, so it did not affect our stay

As we arrived quite early, we were treated like VIPs as the doorman proceeded to open the doors for us when we arrived and offered to take our luggage. You can see that the entrance is heavily decorated with elements of the local religions and customs like the silk scarfs Kata. We were also given a kata as a greeting and seated in the waiting area while the staff checked us in. The entire lobby and first floor are decorated in an opulent yet sombre atmosphere due to the many religious elements in all their furnishings

We were served tea and a local snack – flower biscuit while we waited for our room to be ready as we arrived much earlier than the check-in time. We waited for close to 20 minutes only as they quickly found an available room for us

The hotel was fairly quiet as we visited during the low peak season. The lobby cafe is dressed up in the same style, with a couple of tables for customers to have simple drinks. The dark wood corridors with golden door tags and lighting remind me vaguely of the St Regis outlet in Bangkok, and I can immediately tell where the owner got their inspiration for the hotel’s decor and style

The room is brightly lit, and the same opulent and lavish style is used with plush sofas and dark wood cabinets. The layout of the room has the main door opening to the bathroom and toilet, with the bedroom towards the inner area of the room. The room is spacious with built-in oxygen facilities, so the room will have automated oxygen circulating in the room at night since the area is considered a high altitude. The entire room has a very comfortable atmosphere for just chilling as the lights are adjusted perfectly and the carpet is luscious and comfortable. The bed had good support and provided a good night’s rest, and the amenities cabinet provided tea and coffee-making facilities. I loved the lounging area with the coffee table, which allowed us to chill and dine at the same time

I absolutely love the fact that there were dual water basins and mirrors, so there is one for each guest in a twin-sharing room. The only awkward setup of the room were the transparent doors of the bathroom and toilet. There was a blur button for the glass window looking out to the bedroom but not for the toilet and bathroom cubicles. Travellers who are particular about privacy might not really like this setup. The wardrobe is also next to the bathroom, so if you hang your coat or outside clothes here, they might get a bit damp from the humidity of the bathroom

Overall, I loved my stay at the Chenrezig Hotel for the great service as well as the very comfortable and lush rooms. The beds were supportive, and the oxygen also provided a good night’s sleep. The icing on the cake was the affordable rates of the room
